The Lasius grandis, often referred to as the Mediterranean Black Ant, is the larger, more robust cousin of the common Lasius niger. While they are physically very similar to the standard garden ant, everything about L. grandis is just a bit “more.” They are slightly larger, significantly faster, and much more aggressive when it comes to defending their territory. Originating from the warmer regions of Southern Europe and North Africa, they bring a bit of Mediterranean “spice” to the typically calm Lasius genus.
