The Camponotus ligniperda is the giant of the European forests and a true crown jewel for any ant keeper. These are among the largest ants found in Europe, and their size alone makes them incredibly impressive to watch. They have a beautiful deep red and black color, with a shiny, robust body that feels very “solid.” Because they are so big, you can see every detail of their behavior, from the way they clean their antennae to how they share food without even needing a magnifying glass.
