The Messor structor, often called the European Harvester Ant, is a unique standout in the Messor genus. While most harvester ants are strictly “one queen” (monogyne) and quite skittish, M. structor is famous for being polygyne (allowing multiple queens in a single colony) and remarkably calm. They are the “gentle giants” of the harvester world, featuring a more “matte” or “fuzzy” appearance due to their fine body hairs, and they are incredibly hardy, making them one of the best choices for beginner keepers.
