The Messor cephalotes, famously known as the Giant African Harvester Ant, is the undisputed titan of the Messor genus. Native to the arid savannas of East Africa (Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania), they are the largest harvester ants in the world. They are a “megafauna” species for ant keepers, featuring massive queens and “alien-looking” Super Majors with heads so large they serve as the colony’s primary biological grain mills.
