The Messor minor hesperius, commonly known as the Lava Harvester Ant, is arguably the most beautiful and visually striking species in the Messor genus. Originating from the volcanic landscapes of the Canary Islands, they are famous for their vivid bi-coloration: while most harvester ants are dark and drab, M. minor hesperius features a brilliant, fiery red head and thorax contrasted against a jet black gaster. They are active, fast growing, and offer one of the most mesmerizing “seed milling” displays in the hobby.
